Always wanted to teach your kids something about history? Then Spanish retailer Zara has the perfect item in its new collection!
Zara has a wide choice of children’s clothing. Their designs are usually very wearable and a perfect reflection of the Zeitgeist. Yet when I stumbled upon a T-shirt in their online store (no longer available, screen capture here), I raised an eyebrow. The T-shirt (for boys from 3 months to 3 years) has a star print on it with the hardly readable text ‘Sheriff’. Many Sheriff’s badges are five pointed, so why choose six points? The one on the T-shirt looks more like the yellow Star of David European jews had to wear during World War 2. To top it off, the stripes of the shirt remind us of the uniforms prisoners in concentration camps had to wear. The association is so obvious that it is hard to imagine that Zara’s designers and product managers didn’t notice when they approved this model. Or did they hire John Galliano as head designer?
I contacted Zara’s head office in La Coruña this morning and received the following statement:
The mentioned T-shirt is no longer on sale in our stores. The design of the T-shirt was only inspired by the sheriff’s stars from the Classic Western films, as the claim of the t-shirt says.
It’s not the first time Zara makes a fashion faux pas. In 2007 they had to withdraw handbags with swastikas.
