Dark Light

USA 2002 (116′)- Dir.: Sam Mendes. With Tom Hanks, Paul Newman | 4 stars | Official site | dvd

Road to Perdition is a film about a father whose son brings him into trouble, and a son whose father changes his life forever. It is also a road movie about male friendship. But above all, it is a beautiful film that tells a very simple story in a majestic way. Paul Newman is impressive in his minimalistic role as a tormented old mafia boss, and Tom Hanks for a change is not the good guy. Which means that Hanks is finally a kind of digestable.
For this film Sam Mendes worked with much the same people as when he made his beautiful debute American Beauty in 1999: The wonderful photography is by Conrad L. Hall, and the soundtrack is composed by Thomas Newman.
